1. Need

Problems require solutions. A profitable product should be solving an existing problem.

Specifically, ask yourself if there is a gap in the market for a product that solves a common problem.

A good starting point is to select a niche based on your unique interests or passions.

Once you have selected your niche or category, list down the most common issues in that niche. N.B. Negative Amazon reviews are a perfect place to start.

Then check if there is gap or opportunity to provide a “winning product” in your chosen niche.

If your product category has lots of good products, take a look at the average cost. Consider if there is a way to manufacture the same product and sell it at a more affordable price.

 

2. Reviews

To identify the best products to sell, it is important to identify gaps in the market that you can fill. A great way to achieve this is by looking at product reviews.

Reviews are one of the most powerful drivers of sales because they are an indication of social proof.

For this reason, it can be very hard to compete with products that have a ton of reviews.

Ideally, the product should have 100 reviews or less. This is a good indicator that the competition is low enough that you will be able to compete easily.

The product’s selling price should range between $20 to $70. If your price is any lower, the product may not be profitable.

If your price is high, you will make your first inventory costs too high to get your product live. You will also be taking unnecessary risk if the product doesn’t end up doing well on Amazon after you launch it.

 

4. Best Sellers Rank (BSR)

Here is the Best Sellers Rank defined by Amazon:

“The Amazon Best Sellers calculation is based on Amazon sales, and is updated hourly to reflect recent and historical sales of every item sold on Amazon.”

Amazon shows a products BSR on the products listing page with 1 being the best-selling.

Your product should have a BSR between 300-5000 in their category. This way you will find a product that has high demand but low competition.

A product ranked beyond 5,000 may not have enough sales volume or demand.

A product ranked below 300 may be too competitive with established sellers with a huge budget for inventory and marketing.

 

5. Private Label

  • What are the final product specifications?
